STATEMENT BY U.S. SENATOR BENJAMIN L. CARDINON THE PASSING OF BENJAMIN HOOKS

“I join all Americans today in mourning the loss of Benjamin Hooks, a civil rights hero and icon.
He dedicated his life to the civil rights movement and to ensuring equality and fairness for all Americans.
As Executive Director of the NAACP for 15 years, he worked to ensure expanded employment opportunities for African Americans in baseball and he prevailed on corporations to participate in economic development projects in black communities.

“The NAACP was transformed under his leadership, adding new members and becoming one of our nation’s leading organizations in the fight against injustice and bigotry.
He also urged fellow Americans who have found success to remember those who have not and to give back to the community.
His calm and steady presence and his tireless efforts to move our nation forward was a testament to his belief that all Americans can achieve the American Dream.”
