WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) issued the following statement today on the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our nation:
“Congress has designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of the brave Americans who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in a once deserted field in Pennsylvania. It was on that day that 3,000 Americans died at the hands of terrorists whose mission was to destroy our country. The Americans who perished on 9/11 were the first casualties of our nation’s fight against terrorism.
“While we suffered a grievous loss that day, we must never forget that we are a strong and determined nation — a nation that will defeat those who want to harm us. Today, as we remember those who died on 9/11, we join together to show the world that our nation is strong, united and resolved to defend our freedom and safeguard our liberty against any enemy.
“Today, we also take time to remember the heroism of the firefighters, police officers, medical workers and other first responders who died in the line of duty trying to save others. We also join together in a special prayer for the men and women in our Armed Forces who work every day to protect us from harm. Our nation is truly fortunate for their dedication to our country’s ideals of democracy and freedom.”
