SENATOR CARDIN PARTICIPATES IN GROUNDBREAKING FOR NEW COMMUNITY BASED OUTPATIENT CLINIC AT FT. DETRICK
FREDERICK –
U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) today joined Army and Department of Veterans Affairs officials in breaking ground for a new 14,500-square foot community based outpatient clinic (CBOC) that will improve health care access for veterans in the Western Maryland region.

The new clinic is scheduled to be activated in July 2010.  It will provide more convenient community based health care services, including primary care, mental health services, physical exams, preventive care, continuity of care for chronic medical illnesses, same day evaluation of urgent medical problems, limited medications, routine EKGs and X-rays and laboratory services.

“We made certain promises to our veterans and we need to keep those promises.  It’s critical that our veterans get the health care services they need in a timely, convenient manner and this new community based outpatient clinic will make it much easier for veterans in Western Maryland to access the health care services they need,”
said Senator Cardin.

The Ft. Detrick location will greatly reduce the time and distance that many veterans have to travel for health care.  It is anticipated that 2,726 existing patients and 342 new patients will receive treatment at the Ft. Detrick clinic.  Routine specialty care consults will be referred to the Martinsburg VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, WVA.
