SENATOR CARDIN MEETS WITH ATTORNEY GENERAL NOMINEE MUKASEY

WASHIINGTON –
U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin, D-MD, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today met with former federal District Court Judge Michael B. Mukasey who was nominated earlier this week to be Attorney General.

The Senator issued the following statement following the meeting:

“Judge Mukasey and I had a very good discussion.
I particularly wanted to meet with him to convey the importance of the confirmation process and the need for him to have a firm game plan he can present during the confirmation hearing that will restore leadership, professionalism and independence to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Specifically, I talked with Judge Mukasey about restoring the DOJ’s commitment to civil rights enforcement, strengthening the Civil Rights Division, and implementing a strong and effective policy for the recruitment of minorities and women.

“I am impressed with Judge Mukasey’s background, and I look forward to the confirmation hearings and learning
more about his views on how he would lead the DOJ if confirmed by the Senate.”
