BALTIMORE

U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin today joined
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and
U.S. Congressmen Elijah Cummings and John Sarbanes (all D-MD) to celebrate 300 YouthWorks summer jobs for this year as part of the Baltimore Career Corp.
Senator Cardin and Congressman were responsible for getting $575,000 in funding from the Department of Labor for the program.

“We need to provide our young people with the training and skills needed to succeed in a highly competitive job market,” said
Senator Cardin.  “On-the-job experience is critical to future success and I am pleased that we were able to get the funding this year for YouthWorks participants to get summer jobs that will give them the experience and skills they need for the future.”

“Job opportunities for young people have dried up in this difficult economy,” said
Congressman Sarbanes. “Summer jobs not only provide income, they also lead to increased responsibility and provide tremendous tools for future careers. I look forward to working with the Mayor and others in the community to bolster summer job opportunities for young people.”

“At the federal level, our strong Congressional delegation works consistently to provide local support to the citizens of

Baltimore

,” said
Mayor Rawlings-Blake. “This year, thanks to a grant sponsored by Congressman John Sarbanes and supported by the entire delegation, our YouthWorks summer jobs program is able to employ 300 young people in career-oriented positions at worksites such as Sinai Hospital, Civic Works and the National Aquarium.”

YouthWorks participants are assigned to a variety of private- and public-sector work sites, including hospitals, summer camps, law offices, the National Aquarium, and environmental “green” jobs. The participants work in teams on career-related activities and also participate in weekly career seminars.
