SENATOR CARDIN APPLAUDS PRESIDENT OBAMA’S FY 2010 BUDGET FOR ITS HONESTY AND FOR RESTORING IMPORTANT NATIONAL PRIORITIES

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), a member of the U.S. Senate Budget Committee, released the following statement about President Barack Obama’s FY 2010 budget:

“President Obama’s FY 2010 budget is an honest and responsible plan that will enable our nation to confront the difficult challenges we face without gimmicks that hide the true cost of government.   The President’s budget resets America’s priorities by including proposals that will end our dependence on foreign energy, establish a foundation for universal health coverage, and improve our schools so that our children can compete in the 21st Century.

“As a member of the Budget Committee, I applaud the President’s goal of cutting our deficit in half by the end of his first term, his return to honest budgeting that states the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and that accounts for the full cost of Medicare.  I also support his call to return to “pay-as-you-go” budgeting, which helped create the surpluses of a decade ago.

“Our nation is facing difficult
economic challenges, but I am encouraged that President Obama has had the courage to present Congress with a budget that will help restore our nation’s economic health.”
