Labor Day 2015

BALTIMORE – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) issued the following statement in recognition of Labor Day 2015, which is Monday, September 7.

“Labor Day is a chance to reflect on the immense impact American workers have had in shaping this great nation. From infrastructure to advanced technologies and everything in between, American workers have always shown their ability to outcompete other workforces. America is a world leader in so many arenas because of the hard work, innovation, and resiliency of our workforce.

“This Labor Day, we need to recommit to investing in our workforce. We need to improve the quality and availability of education, health care and affordable housing. We need to finally and comprehensively address the growing problem of income inequality because in 2015, in America, the term ‘working poor’ should not exist. We need to make sure that anyone who wants to work can find a quality job and provide for themselves and their family. We need to help Americans better plan for retirement so that after years in the workforces people can enjoy the fruits of their labor. We need to reform our tax system so that everyone pays their fair share and we can have an American manufacturing renaissance.

“I will continue to stand up to those who look to gain political points by attacking labor unions, especially in the public sector, and take important rights away from working families across this county. The American workforce is the best trained, most productive in the world.  The success of American workers helped to build our middle class, and a major part of building the middle class has been the American Labor movement.

“This Labor Day, I am thankful for the innumerable, hard-working men and women who, for generations, have made our nation stronger.
