Cardin: We Need More Protection for Our Water Not Less
"Repealing this rule is yet another example of President Trump adding uncertainty to our economy and our communities nationwide."

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a senior member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, issued the following statement on the Trump Administration’s announcement that they intend to gut the Clean Water Act:

“Every community in America needs clean, safe water every day for every resident and President Trump’s repeal of the Clean Water Rule puts that in serious jeopardy. The move is blatantly partisan and can best be described as shortsighted, and dangerous. Repealing this rule is yet another example of President Trump adding uncertainty to our economy and our communities nationwide.

“The Clean Water Rule has protected our drinking water, our wetlands that filters pollutants, our communities from floods, and provided habitat for wildlife in Maryland and throughout the nation. In its 45 years, the Clean Water Act has been an unequivocal success. Despite all of this, the repeal of the Clean Water rule has been on the Republican hit list for years. Today, President Trump has handed yet another partisan gift to big corporations and polluters.

“We need more protection for our water not less. Going back to the drawing board is not moving us in the right direction. Despite President Trump’s and Administrator Pruitt’s attacks, I will continue to fight for America’s right to clean water.”
