WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Representative John Sarbanes (all D-Md.) today announced $3,393,750 in new federal funds for the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) through the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). These funds will be used to rehabilitate a taxiway lighting system that will enhance safety during low visibility conditions and to reconstruct pavement on a second taxiway. These funds follow $10 million for construction at the airport announced by the lawmakers in August of this year. Serving more than 26 million passengers per year, BWI is the region’s busiest airport.
“Each year, the safety and convenience of millions of travelers depend on BWI airport. These federal investments in infrastructure modernization will make our airport and regional economy stronger for years to come,” said Senator Cardin, ranking member on the Senate Environment and Public Works Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee. “I will continue to work to make sure that airports around our state support economic growth and the safe, efficient transportation needs of all Marylanders.”
“BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport serves millions of people every year and is central to our state’s economic success,” said Senator Van Hollen, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committees. “This funding will help ensure that BWI is able to continue providing safe and reliable service to Marylanders and visitors alike, and I will keep fighting to make sure airports across Maryland have the resources they need.”
“This grant for BWI will help improve safety and modernize runway infrastructure at one of Maryland’s most important airports,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “The Maryland Congressional Delegation will continue to work together in order to deliver meaningful federal resources for BWI Airport and other transportation centers across our state.”
This DOT grant will be awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program, funded through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2019. The program funds various types of airport infrastructure projects, including runways, taxiways, and airport signage, lighting, and markings. It helps to create thousands of jobs across the country.
