Cardin Urges Republicans To Set Aside Partisanship For Humanitarian And Disaster Relief

WASHINGTON –  U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) provided the following remarks before the start of the summer work period:

“I am extremely disappointed that Senate Republicans blocked the emergency supplemental. The supplemental was a first step to respond to the surge of unaccompanied minors crossing our borders, by providing essential funding for border security, law enforcement, and humanitarian assistance.  This measure simply gives the necessary resources to our dedicated and hardworking personnel on the front lines of this crisis so that they can do their jobs.  The measure would also have provided critical funding to combat the growing number of wildfires in the West. The supplemental was well-balanced and represented the national interests of this country, and still we couldn’t get it done. It is my hope that when Congress returns in September we can put aside our partisanship and move this emergency funding forward.”
