“Myrna and I send our condolences during this heartbreaking time to the Evans family and the Capitol Police Officers, who continue to stand watch 365 days a year, 24 hours a day at the heart of our democracy.”

WASHINGTON U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) released the following statement in response to the attack at the U.S. Capitol Friday.

“Today, the nation mourns alongside the family of veteran Capitol Police Officer Billy Evans who died in the line of duty this afternoon defending the U.S. Capitol from an attacker. Officer Evans and his fellow officer, who also was wounded, showed incredible courage in the face of grave danger. Myrna and I send our condolences during this heartbreaking time to the Evans family and the Capitol Police Officers, who continue to stand watch 365 days a year, 24 hours a day at the heart of our democracy. We also extend our thanks to the National Guard and first responders who protect our great Capitol.”
