WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), issued the following statement following the Senate passage of S.546 – Never Forget the Heroes: Permanent Authorization of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Act, which he cosponsored.
“Taking care of the health needs of survivors of the 9/11 terrorist attack and the first responders who ran toward danger to save lives, is about moral responsibility. The horrendous tragedy, nearly 18 years ago, left an imprint on the American consciousness and spirit. But, for the individuals and families affected, the scars of that fateful day – the illness, pain, and loss – remained permanent. So must our commitment to the impossible task of repaying them for their bravery. The permanent extension of the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund is a long-overdue recognition of our gratitude for their sacrifice for our country and our citizens. Just as we pledged never to forget the tragedy of 9/11, we must not forget its heroes.”
