WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) responded with the following statement after the President announced that he was dissolving his Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. Since it was first announced, Cardin has seen this group for what is truly was: a taxpayer-funded attempt to legalize voter suppression.
“This so-called election integrity commission never should have been formed, so I am glad the President dissolved it. I thank the civil rights groups and state governments who stood up to this Administration’s attempt to legalize voter suppression and purge eligible voters from the rolls. The President’s claim of ‘substantial evidence of voter fraud’ is patently false. It is a poor excuse for the President to waste taxpayer dollars to try to justify why he lost the popular vote in 2016. I urge the President to instead work with Congress to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act, after several adverse Supreme Court decisions which weakened it. The President and Congress should make it easier, not harder, for Americans to exercise the fundamental constitutional right to vote.”
