BALTIMORE – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) issued the following statement. Senator Cardin is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations, Environment and Public Works, Finance and Small Business and Entrepreneurship committees.
“I believe that elections have consequences. While some may predict further gridlock and political polarization with a Congress led by one party and the President of another, I firmly believe we must find a way to work together on the issues of most importance to the American public. Divided government means that bipartisanship and cooperation is absolutely essential for moving forward any piece of legislation. As Democrats, Republicans and Independents, we will continue to embrace our core values, but we need to admit that we all have the same goals: prosperity for American families, creating opportunities for more Americans to succeed, maintaining America’s global leadership, and protecting America’s national security while keeping the American people safe from those who would do us harm.
“In Maryland the need for bipartisan cooperation to meet the challenges facing our constituents is equally strong. I congratulate Governor-Elect Larry Hogan on his election. I also thank Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown on his service to our country and our great state. I am confident that Team Maryland will work with the new leadership on Annapolis to continue our strong federal-state partnership.
