CARDIN STATEMENT ON INCLUSION OF A PUBLIC OPTION IN THE MERGED SENATE HEALTH REFORM BILL

Washington, DC – After the announcement by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that a public option will be included in the health reform bill to be considered by the full Senate,
U.S.
Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), released the following statement. Senator Cardin has been a consistent and vocal supporter of the inclusion of a public health insurance option.

“I am pleased that Majority Leader Reid will retain a public option health plan in his merged version of the Finance and HELP Committee bills.
Greater choice and competition within the health care market will help ensure that all Americans will have access to the quality, affordable health care that they need.

“I have said repeatedly that a public option – which describes who pays for the plan and not who provides the medical services – would be the easiest way to provide an affordable, quality choice plan for those not otherwise covered by private insurers and help keep private insurers in check by serving as a low-cost competitor.”
