Cardin Statement on House Passage of H.Res.17 (ERA)

Congress must not stand in the way of finally enshrining equality for women into our Constitution.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.), lead sponsor of Senate Joint Resolution 1, which, like House Joint Resolution 17, would remove the deadline set by Congress for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), issued the following statement.

“The House of Representatives has taken a monumental step toward finally enshrining equality for women in our Constitution. The Senate must now take this decades-long struggle over the finish line. We must remove any legal obstacles to certifying the ERA. There should be no timeline on equality.

“Most Americans are surprised to learn that the ERA is not already part of the U.S. Constitution. I urge my colleagues to make this a reality now.”
