Cardin Statement on Confirmation Vote for Betsy DeVos to Serve as U.S. Secretary of Education

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) released the following statement Tuesday regarding his vote against the nomination of Betsy DeVos to serve as Secretary of Education:

“Thousands of Marylanders have called, emailed, contacted me through Twitter and Facebook, and stopped me on the street to express their strong support for public education and concerns about the commitment of Mrs. DeVos to public schools. I share their concerns. Marylanders and I agree that the students in our state deserve a Secretary of Education who will support, strengthen, and improve public education, uphold the rights for children with disabilities, promote safe learning environments through gun-free school zones, and work to provide students and families with a more affordable higher education. It is now Mrs. DeVos’ responsibility to prove that she will work in the best interests of America’s students – all of America’s students.”
