Cardin Says Trump Has Forfeited His Right to Serve
"We cannot wait 13 days. He must resign or be removed from office quickly – either through the 25th Amendment or by impeachment – before he does even more damage to our nation."

BALTIMORE – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) released the following statement regarding President Donald Trump and the urgent need for him to leave office before January 20.

“Donald Trump has never understood that being president of the United States is about serving the country and not how the country can serve him. The terrorist acts that took place in the U.S. Capitol yesterday were the culmination of his words and selfish actions. For years, President Trump has stoked hate, fear, racism and division with lie after lie, degrading and destroying our government from within. After pouring the gasoline, yesterday morning he lit the match by telling his supporters to head to the Capitol. They listened and the insurrection was aflame. It’s quite unfathomable that the sitting president of the United States encouraged this deadly chaos – an invasion of the United States Capitol.

“This violent behavior and blatant disregard for the rule of law can never be normalized. Our republic should not have at its head a person who incites such violence and continues to disregard the rule of law and our Constitution. Donald Trump has forfeited his right to serve. We cannot wait 13 days. He must resign or be removed from office quickly – either through the 25th Amendment or by impeachment – before he does even more damage to our nation. Public servants, in Congress and in the Cabinet, cannot, in good conscience, allow President Trump to continue to behave like an unstable dictator who undermines our democratic institutions and burns down the very foundations of our country on his way out of office.”
