Cardin Says Trump Effort to Cut Funding for the Chesapeake Bay, Again, Needs to be Rejected By Congress

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a senior member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, released the following statement on the Trump Administration’s latest attempt to cut funding for the Chesapeake Bay Program.

“Once again, President Trump has ignored the bipartisan support in Congress for a strong, well-funded multi-state effort to protect the Chesapeake Bay. Last year, Congress quickly rejected the president’s plan to zero out funding for the Environmental Protection Agency Chesapeake Bay Program. This year, he had the audacity to attack the Chesapeake Bay again, leaving a paltry $7.3 million to support the nation’s largest estuary. The president claims over and over again that he wants to help strengthen our economy and create jobs but yet he simultaneously seeks to eliminate critical federal investments that allow Chesapeake Bay states like Maryland to prosper. A healthy Bay means a healthy economy and this cannot be accomplished without a strong federal partner. A budget is supposed to reflect our nation’s priorities, which is why the Trump budget needs to be rejected by Congress.”
