Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, in response to allegations that some staff at the Internal Revenue Service inappropriately targeted certain organizations for extra scrutiny based on their political leanings, made the following remarks:

“The Internal Revenue Service has a responsibility to ensure that organizations that receive tax-exempt status are complying with the law and not performing impermissible activities.  However, under no circumstances should we tolerate targeting organizations by any government agency based on philosophy or political agenda – Right or Left. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, I intend to review the results of all appropriate investigations into the accusations being leveled against the IRS.”
