WASHINGTON –
U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement concerning the multilateral agreement on Iranian sanctions announced by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
“For the safety of the world, Iran’s nuclear ambitions must be contained. I applaud the Obama Administration for its success bringing along Russia and China, in partnership with the U.S., Britain, France and Germany, to extend international sanctions against Iran concerning its nuclear programs and weapons.
Congress is now poised to match the President’s actions with strong sanctions that carry the full weight of U.S. law.
“Our common goal is to ensure that Iran not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
The trilateral scheme announced yesterday between Iran, Brazil and Turkey, under which Iran plans to send some of its uranium abroad, is insufficient to stave off new sanctions.
We must make certain that the U.S. and multilateral efforts to end Tehran's nuclear activities are not undermined.”
