WASHINGTON, D.C. –

Senators Benjamin L. Cardin
and
Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-Md.) today announced a grant putting
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds in the federal checkbook to get people across Maryland ready for green industries jobs.
The Department of Labor has awarded a $5.8 million ARRA grant to a consortium of organizations and businesses for the “Smart, Green and Growing” project, which will provide training and job placement assistance in solar, green technology, energy-efficient building, construction and retrofit, and environmental technology. It will improve manufacturing sustainability practices and waste stream management, lead to green practices in the manufacturing sector, develop and expand green construction training options, and assist workers as they pursue environmental technology careers.
“This Partnership is funded with recovery dollars and it is an investment in our future – a future in which our state and nation will become more energy efficient and independent and one that will create new, green jobs that will help grow our economy,” said
Senator Cardin, a member of the Senate Budget Committee.
“This funding is exactly what the
American Recovery & Reinvestment Act is all about – creating and sustaining jobs today and preparing for the jobs of tomorrow,”
Senator Mikulski said. “This grant will give Marylanders the opportunity to get the training they need to find and keep a job, while also helping to make sure that manufacturing and construction in Maryland is environmentally friendly.”

The organizations that will partner to implement “Smart, Green and Growing” include: College of Southern Maryland, Johnson Controls, Maryland State Department of Education, Maryland State AFL-CIO, Associated Builders & Contractors – Chesapeake, Towson University, SunEdison, Terralogos Energy Group, Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, Maryland Clean Energy Center, Baltimore County Office of Workforce Development, Governor’s Workforce Investment Board, Heat and Frost Insulation and Allied Workers 24, Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, Maryland Energy Administration, Pepco Energy Services, Solar Energy Industries Association Maryland, Prince George’s Community College and Constellation Energy Projects & Services Group.
