WASHINGTON –
U.S. Senators Benjamin L. Cardin and
Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-MD) today announced the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Allegany College of Maryland to convert four traditional classrooms into interactive classrooms using Smart Classroom Technology. The College will use this new technology to provide training in healthcare, general office and business skills. It is estimated this training will result in 100 people obtaining, retaining, or enhancing their employment.
“Education is the key to the American Dream and this ARC grant will make it easier for more Marylanders to access the skills and training they need to succeed,” said
Senator Cardin. “I will continue to support programs that will provide Americans with the knowledge and expertise for the changing job market of the 21st Century.”

Senator Mikulski said. “This federal investment will help more Marylanders receive the important training they need to get jobs, keep jobs, or excel in their jobs. Education is the engine of an innovation economy, and I’m proud that this funding will keep Maryland students engaged in the careers of their future.”
Allegany College of Maryland will use this ARC grant funding to install interactive Smart Technology in four of its classrooms. The upgraded smart classrooms will be outfitted with computers, smartboards and projectors, screens, DVD/Video players, instructor control consoles and audience response clickers. The College estimates the new technology will be used to train at least 200 people in health care, general office and business skills.
In addition to ARC funds, local sources will provide $50,000, bringing the total project funding to $100,000. The ARC is a federal-state partnership that works with the people of Appalachia to create opportunities for self-sustaining economic development and improved quality of life.
