Cardin Lauds the Confirmation of Marylander Dr. Deborah L. Birx to Lead U.S. Global HIV/AIDS Office

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, welcomed the confirmation of Dr. Deborah L. Birx of Potomac, Maryland, to be the Ambassador at Large and Coordinator of United States Government Activities to Combat HIV/AIDS Globally. Senator Cardin had the honor of introducing Dr. Birx at her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in March.

“Dr. Deborah Birx is a distinguished retroviral expert with extensive academic and hands on experience and one of the most well-qualified nominees that has ever come before the U.S. Senate for confirmation. I am confident that she will help maintain America’s leadership on the front lines of the global quest to eradicate HIV/AIDS and will help move us closer toward the promise of an AIDS-free generation,” said Senator Cardin. “Dr. Birx is a pioneer in HIV/AIDS research who has dedicated her life’s work to public service and we are proud that she calls Maryland her home.”
