CARDIN LAUDS PASSAGE OF BILL TO BOOST HIRING OF UNEMPLOYED AND SERVICE-DISABLED VETERANS

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) today issued the following statement after Senate passage of the VOW to Hire Heroes Act. The legislation would offer a tax credit to companies that hire veterans who have been unemployed for more than four weeks, and will increase existing tax credits for companies that hire veterans with service-connected disabilities. Additionally, the bill would ensure that all service-members transitioning to civilian life receive the job training skills they need to find a job.

“As we wind down our commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan after a decade of war, we need to gear up our commitment to America’s Veterans.  Whether it is helping Veterans get job training, or helping them translate their military experience into private sector occupations, or helping those who are homeless with more fundamental needs like food, shelter and medical care, we have a solemn obligation to provide the necessary resources.  This bill lays the groundwork for providing our Veterans the resources they deserve to bring their indispensible leadership and dedication to the private sector.  America’s Veterans have sacrificed so much in our most recent wars and throughout our nation’s history. On this eve of Veterans Day, it is imperative that we pass this important legislation that will make a difference in so many lives.”
