Cardin Lauds Nearly $130M in Shuttered Venue Operators Grant Awards to More Than 120 MD Venues

Program Has Awarded $7.5B to More Than 10,000 Venues Nationwide

Cardin Helped Establish Bipartisan $16.25B Program to Support Venues Affected by the Pandemic

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business & Entrepreneurship Chair Ben Cardin (D-Md.) today issued a statement after the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced that the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) Program reached a new milestone of successfully awarding more than $7.5 billion to more than 10,000 venues nationwide, including more than $130 million to more than 120 venues in Maryland.

“I am grateful that live venues and cultural institutions in Maryland and nationwide are beginning to receive the aid they need to survive the COVID-19 pandemic and recover from the worst economic crisis in nearly 100 years,” Cardin said. “I have already heard from many venue operators across Maryland who intend to use their SVOG funds to catch up on bills, quickly rehire staff, and prepare for reopening. Last year life changed for all of us, practically overnight, so I am looking forward to the return of winding box office lines and lit-up marquees in the months ahead as our communities continue to recover from COVID-19.”

SBA’s announcement comes on the heels of a press conference hosted by Cardin and Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-Md.) yesterday on the front steps of the Baltimore Center Stage, where the Members were joined by Baltimore venue operators who have received SVOG awards and promised continued support for businesses struggling to get back on their feet.

Congress created SVOG in the bipartisan Economic Aid Act passed in December, which also appropriated $15 billion to the program. An additional $1.25 billion in funding for the program was included in President Joe Biden’s historic American Rescue Plan.

SVOG provides grants of up to $10 million to live venue operators and promotors, theatrical producers, live performing arts organizations, museums, independent movie theaters, and talent representatives that can demonstrate a revenue loss of at least 25 percent due to the pandemic. Grant awards are for an amount equal to 45% of the recipient organization’s 2019 gross earned revenue, up to $10 million.
