WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) released the following statement on the video footage depicting the brutal beating and subsequent killing of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tenn.
“The Memphis Police Department video is beyond disturbing. Such brutality cannot keep happening. Tyre Nichols should be home with his family. We share their outrage and grief, but can never fill the void that has been violently torn in their life. There must be accountability and justice,” said Senator Cardin. “I join President Biden in renewing the urgent call for Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. There is a better way. Our communities deserve to be protected, not threatened by those sworn to uphold the law.”
