CARDIN FILES AMENDMENT TO POSTAL REFORM BILL TO PREVENT CLOSURE OF THE EASTON PROCESSING CENTER

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-M) today filed an amendment to the 21st Century Postal Service Act, S. 1789, which would prevent the closure of the Easton, MD mail processing center.

Senator Cardin’s amendment would prohibit the closure of a postal processing facility if the next closest one is more than 50 miles away.  The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has said it is considering closing the Easton facility and moving its functions to Wilmington, DE, approximately 80 miles away.

“I am determined to prevent the closure of the Easton processing center,” said Senator Cardin. “This center is critical to the efficient delivery of mail and its closures would seriously affect mail service in the eastern region of our state.  I will fight any move to close the Easton facility because it is important to the prompt delivery of mail and is an important economic anchor in the region, providing good-paying jobs to Marylanders.

The Easton mail center employs 125 workers and processes 188 million pieces of mail a year.  In February, the USPS announced that it would close at least 223 mail processing facilities nationwide over a three-year period.
