Cardin Condemns Murder of Prince George’s County Police Officer, Welcomes Federal Assistance in Investigation

BALTIMORE – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) issued the following statement regarding the murder of Jacai Colson #3693, a member of the Prince George’s County Police Department, during an attack on a police station in Landover, Md.

“I was deeply disturbed to learn of the senseless murder of Officer Colson. Law enforcement officers are on the front lines of upholding the rule of law. The murder of Officer Colson is a blow to the rule of law in America and, indeed, to all Americans. This was a senseless attack and we must bring those responsible to justice. State and local authorities are working overtime to get to the bottom of this.  I welcome the infusion of federal talent and resources in this effort. I join all Marylanders in mourning the untimely loss of a young man who gave of himself to serve others. I will continue to monitor the situation and will be keeping the Colson family and the entire Maryland law enforcement community in my prayers. Recent weeks have brought a horrible pain to law enforcement in the region. This violence must cease.”

Senator Cardin’s Blue Alert legislation to expedite the apprehension of criminals who have threatened, injured or killed law enforcement officers was signed into law in May of last year.
