BALTIMORE – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement on North Korea’s missile test.
“North Korea’s missile test is a test of an intercontinental ballistic missile and yet another demonstration of the malign ambitions of the regime in Pyongyang. It is a clear and direct threat to U.S. national security interests and those of our allies and partners. If the January 6 nuclear test were not enough, this missile test clearly demonstrates to the United Nations Security Council and the international community that it must take decisive, unified action to counter the North Korean threat to peace and security.
“The United States will stand with our allies in Seoul and Tokyo to safeguard our security and that of our allies to ensure that North Korea will only meet further isolation and condemnation for their provocative and belligerent acts.
“This week, the Senate will take action on legislation to impose new sanctions on North Korea in response to its actions today, as well as its recent nuclear test, cyber-attacks on U.S. companies and gross violations of human rights.”
