CARDIN CALLS NEW SANCTIONS ON IRAN ESSENTIAL FOR GLOBAL SECURITY

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD)

, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, released the following statement in response to today the United Nations Security Council’s passage of Resolution 1929 sanctioning Iran.

“I am heartened that the United Nations Security Council focused on its monumental task at hand – dealing with Iran’s dangerous nuclear regime. At present, this is the biggest threat to global security and crafting and implementing these crucial sanctions was paramount.

“The United States and a strong contingent of international partners have responded with meaningful sanctions to Iran’s repeated deception and irresponsible behavior. We have long known that Iran’s nuclear intentions were anything but benign and by enhancing restrictions on the nuclear program, as well as their financial interests and military program, these sanctions will place new pressure on Iran to address the international community’s concerns with its nuclear activities.

“Today’s action also marks a success for the power of multilateral cooperation and U.S. diplomacy and I congratulate the Obama Administration on this latest development.”
