CARDIN CALLS FOR REFORM OF GENERAL SERVICES ADMINISTRATION

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) today called for reforms within the General Services Administration (GSA) during a Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) oversight hearing on the agency.  He issued the following remarks on the conduct and spending in the GSA’s Western Region:

“The shocking and shameful extraneous spending that GSA engaged in during its 2010 Western Regional Conference was offensive to the American taxpayers who ultimately had to foot the bill,” said Senator Cardin.  “This event is indicative of the culture of this agency that goes back many years.  What might be appropriate for a private company that footings the bill, is not appropriate for the GSA, which is an arm of the federal government and is responsible to taxpayers.

“GSA is vitally important to the function of the federal government, but reforms that return some perspective and accountability to the Agency are in order. Congress needs to work with the GSA to advance effective reforms that will make sure this type of incident never occurs in the future.”
