U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and chairman of its Water and Wildlife Subcommittee, released the following statement upon the final determination by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that “greenhouse gases (GHGs) threaten the public health and welfare of the American people.”
Senator Cardin: “Today’s endangerment finding is a critical step in our country’s efforts to stop global warming, which not only poses a threat to public health and welfare, but to our national security. As negotiations begin in Copenhagen today, the EPA’s announcement also sends an important signal to the world about the United States’ commitment to take decisive action. I am pleased with the strong, science-based actions taken by this Administration to live up to its Clean Air Act obligations to protect our health. But the best way for our country to solve this problem is through comprehensive legislation that will invest in innovation and infrastructure and help our industry and our communities make the transition to a clean energy economy.”
