Cardin Brings ‘Made In Maryland’ Tour To Volvo Group Trucks, The Largest Employer In Washington County

Hagerstown, MD – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, toured the Volvo Group Trucks factory in Hagerstown today as part of his ‘Made in Maryland’ tour of companies that are supporting quality jobs for Marylanders.  Volvo employs 1,400 at Hagerstown plant and is the largest private employer in Washington County. Most employees are members of the United Auto Workers (UAW). Mack Truck, which is now a part of the Volvo Group, has been producing heavy truck engines in Hagerstown since 1961. The company has invested more than $300 million since 2001 in significant upgrades, including $8 million recently for a new production line at Hagerstown, which opened in 2012 and added 50 new employees to produce new automated manual transmissions for heavy trucks.

“At such an important time for America’s economic recovery, ‘Made in Maryland’ is my way to highlight the diverse products being produced in our great state and adding to the growth of our economy. Volvo Group Trucks and Mack Truck have been a part of the western Maryland community and economy for more than 50 years. It’s been the resiliency of American manufacturers and our Maryland labor force that has seen us through the toughest of times,” said Senator Cardin. “It was great to be in Hagerstown and visit with the hardworking members of UAW Local 171 and Local 1247.”

“I’m continually working on policies that will build on the progress we’ve made thus far—particularly policies that will promote the export of American goods, encourage businesses to bring jobs and innovation back to the United States, train and secure a twenty-first century workforce, and contribute to a national manufacturing strategy. Federal investment in energy efficiency has helped Volvo Group Trucks adapt and grow to become makers of the cleanest engines in the world. And with the continuing support of proper policies, I’m confident they will continue to thrive.”
