WASHINGTON –
U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) announced that the

Department of Defense Appropriations Act of Fiscal Year 2010
passed by the Senate today by a vote of 88-10includes funding for two of his requests that will help save the lives of soldiers suffering from severe blood loss and that will fund a new, innovative therapy to help patients who are paralyzed due to spinal cord injuries. The bill now goes to the President for his signature.

 

The Department of Defense Appropriations Act of Fiscal Year 2010
includes $2.4 million for STB Lifesaving Technologies in Rockville to develop the Fibrin Adhesive Stat (FAST) Dressing. This new bandage is designed to be effective against all kinds of blood loss, including severe arterial and venous bleeding. The funding will make it possible for additional clinical trials and final Federal Drug Administration (FDA) testing and documentation.

 

The Department of Defense Appropriations Act of Fiscal Year 2010
also includes $1.6 million for the Kennedy-Krieger Institute’s advanced restoration therapies in spinal cord injury. The funding will enable the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at the Baltimore-based Kennedy-Krieger Institute to continue to develop an innovative therapy technique that stimulates normal movements, a practice that can help regenerate cells and help patients’ bodies “remember” how to move.
