WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a senior member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, today announced that a total of approximately $3 million in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers funding will be directed to Maryland’s Atlantic coastal shorelines. Specifically, as outlined in the Army Corps Baltimore District’s FY2017 workplan, $2.4 million will be dedicated to replenishing Ocean City’s beaches to pre-2016 levels and $600,000 will fund restoration and monitoring efforts along Assateague Island.

“Those of us who love getting down the ocean know that Maryland’s beaches are special places to relax and recharge. While we all know the recreational value of our beaches, we sometimes forget that they provide even more important functions, like protecting from dangerous storm surges the habitats, towns and people that stand behind them,” said Senator Cardin. “That’s why after hearing from local officials just how important this funding would be to their communities – and how much money these investments in beach restoration and replenishment would prevent in future damage – I fought to have the funding successfully directed to these priority projects.”  

“Whether they prefer the solitude of Assateague Island or the vitality of Ocean City’s beaches,” Senator Cardin added, “Marylanders can rest assured that their entire congressional delegation will continue working to protect and restore these incredibly important resources.”
