WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin (D-Md.) and Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), co-chairs of the Atlantic Council’s Colombia Task Force, have introduced a Senate Resolution supporting efforts by the Government of Colombia to pursue peace and regional stability.

“Colombia has made great strides to bring peace, security, good governance, and economic prosperity to its country.” Senator Cardin said.  “This resolution reaffirms the U.S. commitment to our strategic partnership with Colombia and dedication to tackling the challenges the Colombian people still face from armed criminal groups and the crisis in neighboring Venezuela.  Addressing these problems will strengthen the security and prosperity of both of our countries.” 

“Colombia has made significant progress on economic, social, and security challenges over the past two decades. Those changes have paved the way for new opportunities to further strengthen the U.S.-Colombia strategic relationship to the benefit of both nations. Now is the time to ensure Colombia has a solid foundation for continued growth and investment,” said Senator Blunt.

The resolution recognizes the progress that the U.S. – Colombia partnership has made in bringing peace to Colombia, reducing violence, combatting drug trafficking, and growing the economies of the both countries.  It further expresses the Senate’s resolve that the United States and Colombia continue to work together to secure lasting peace and reconciliation, protect human right and good governance, and promote security, both in Colombia and elsewhere in the world.
