CARDIN VISITS CARROLL CO. CLOTHING MANUFACTURER TO DISCUSS NEED TO SUPPORT U.S. MANUFACTURING, BRING JOBS HOME TO AMERICA

WESTMINSTER, MD — U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) today visited the English American Tailoring Company in Westminster, which is one of the few remaining clothing manufacturers in Maryland.  The Senator toured the plant and met with workers and management to discuss the need to keep jobs in the United States and to provide American companies with more support so they can compete in the global marketplace.

In the last decade, approximately 2.4 million jobs were shipped overseas, with U.S. taxpayers subsidizing the moving costs.  Senator Cardin is a co-sponsor of the Bring Jobs Home Act, S. 3364, which is being considered by the U.S. Senate and would end the tax benefits provides to companies that move jobs overseas. The bill also provides tax credits to encourage U.S. companies to move production back to the United States.

“American manufacturing is hurting because we have not done enough to support U.S. companies and jobs,” said Senator Cardin, a member of the Finance and Budget Committees. “That needs to change.  I am working hard to make sure that job creation is our number one priority and that U.S. companies are rewarded for bringing jobs home – not from sending them overseas.”

“Our company, and our 380 workers, are proud to be manufacturing world-class suits in Westminster, Maryland, suits that are sold not only here in the U.S., but also exported across the globe,” said Mark J. Falcone, Divisional President IAG Manufacturing.

English American Tailoring, which has 380 unionized workers, was founded more than 100 years ago and uses some of the finest wool and other materials to produce suits.  To support U.S. clothing manufacturers, Senator Cardin has worked on legislation that would “level the playing field” for U.S. companies that import wool fabrics.
