SENATOR CARDIN TELLS PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY SENIORS THEY WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN IN THE ECONOMIC RECOVERY

Mitchellville, MD –
U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) today visited with seniors at the
Collington Episcopal Life Care Community in Mitchellville, Prince George’s County, where he discussed the state of the economy and issues facing the next Congress.

“Seniors have been hit especially hard during our current economic crisis,” said
Senator Cardin. “After years of playing by the rules and contributing to the economic growth of our nation, many have seen the equity in their homes and the value of their retirement accounts plummet. Skyrocketing costs for fuel, food and healthcare have been especially hard on those seniors with a fixed income. This Congress and the next have a responsibility to help seniors manage through these difficult times.

“Congress has worked to restore confidence in our economy and stabilize the housing market, but we are not out of danger yet. We must do more to support our nation’s most vulnerable citizens, including our seniors. It is essential that any new economic recovery package address an increase in funding for food stamps, low-income energy assistance and senior meal programs, along with an increase in funding to the states to cover rising Medicare and Medicaid costs. We’ve helped those on Wall Street regain their footing, now we have an obligation to help the rest of our citizens.”
