Cardin, Van Hollen, Trone Announce Nearly $85,000 for Garrett County Low Income Housing Improvements

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin, Chris Van Hollen and Congressman David Trone (all D-Md.) announced the recent award of nearly $85,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development Housing Preservation Grant Program funds to repair and rehabilitate the homes of low and very-low income residents in Garrett County. The nonprofit corporation Garrett County Community Action Committee, Inc. will offer low income homeowners grants and/or low interest loans to fund critical home improvement projects. This money will also ensure that residents meet property and safety standards.

“Every Marylander deserves a safe place to call home. This federal investment will improve living conditions for Garrett County residents who would otherwise struggle to pay for important repairs,” said Senator Cardin. “I will continue to advocate for policies to make housing more affordable for all Marylanders.”

“For families struggling to make ends meet, home repairs can break the bank. These federal funds will help low-income residents of Garrett County make critical home improvements to ensure the safety and security of their homes,” said Senator Van Hollen, a member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committees. “In the Senate, I will continue working to expand economic opportunity and housing security across our state.”

“It is important that our neighbors in Garrett County feel safe and secure in their homes,” said Rep. David Trone. “With this grant, Maryland residents can complete critical maintenance projects to improve living conditions. I will continue to fight for funding like this to keep housing affordable.”

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) awards Housing Preservation grants to organizations including nonprofits, state and local government entities for the repair or rehabilitation of housing owned or occupied by low and very-low-income rural citizens.
