Cardin Statement on WMATA Personnel Changes

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a senior member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee, issued the following statement regarding personnel changes at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).

“Paul Wiedefeld was brought to WMATA to inject professionalism and a true culture of safety throughout the nation’s second largest rail system. Still early in his tenure at WMATA, once again, Mr. Wiedefeld is taking decisive action that demonstrates a strong commitment to safety and the important tasks ahead of him, just as he did during his time at BWI Airport.

“Years of neglectful decisions and a failure to confront problems earlier cannot be reversed overnight. But Metro is integral to the federal government and the Washington region. I will continue to fight to ensure that the federal government remains an effective partner for Metro’s future, providing Mr. Wiedefeld the tools, resources and flexibility he needs to transform Metro into the safe and reliable transit system this region requires.”
