Cardin Statement on Vote to Override Trump Veto of Iran War Powers Resolution
"We in Congress must not cede our responsibilities under the Constitution, nor should we allow this president to exceed his."

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued the following statement on his vote to override President Trump’s veto of an Iran War Powers Resolution, which would provide an important check on presidential authority.

“Today, I was proud to join my colleagues in an important vote to override President Trump’s veto of an Iran War Powers Resolution. The Constitution is clear that only Congress has the power to commit our troops to war. As I said on the Senate floor this February when we first considered this resolution, my generation paid the price for unchecked executive power with the war in Vietnam. War should always be a matter of last resort. While, regretfully, today’s vote did not override the president’s veto, we in Congress must not cede our responsibilities under the Constitution, nor should we allow this president to exceed his.”
