Cardin Statement on MTA Cuts in Baltimore

BALTIMORE – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee, issued the following statement in response to a proposal from the Maryland Transportation Authority (MTA) to cut bus service in Baltimore by 20 percent, along with significant cuts to MARC train and Commuter Bus service.

“When Gov. Hogan walked away from hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding for the Red Line, he promised to invest more heavily in bus lines. Today’s move to cut MTA funding breaks that promise, and hurts the Baltimore-area communities that rely on transit to reach schools, jobs, groceries, medical care and more. The pandemic is forcing us to make tough choices, but cutting essential transit services needed by essential workers and others in the midst of a pandemic is not the way to balance a budget.”
