Cardin Response to Racist Flyers Found at the University of Maryland, College Park

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Special Representative on Anti-Semitism, Racism, and Intolerance for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Parliamentary Assembly, released the following statement on the white nationalist posters found at multiple locations at the University of Maryland, College Park. As reported in UMD’s student newspaper, The Diamondback, “White supremacists have been targeting college campuses at unprecedented levels, according to the ADL.”

Cardin: “Hate is not an American value, it is not part of the foundation of this nation, and the good people of Maryland and across our country will not sit idle while this type of ugliness and is spewed forth at our educational institutions, or anywhere else. I have been greatly disturbed at the growing number of hate-based incidents that we have been witnessing lately. But I also have been heartened by the community outrage pushing back aggressively against these individuals and groups who are ignorant about what it means to be an American. I thank Dr. Loh for speaking out promptly on behalf of the UMD community. Each threat needs to be treated with the utmost seriousness as we band together to discourage such vicious language and activity. Diversity is a strength. Inclusion is a virtue.”
