U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) today was officially named chairman of two key Senate subcommittees:  the Judiciary Terrorism and Homeland Security Subcommittee, which is charged with oversight of our country’s anti-terrorism efforts; and, the Environment and Public Works Water and Wildlife Subcommittee, which works to keep our drinking water clean and protect key wildlife.

“It is an honor to take over the leadership of two Senate subcommittees that have such a profound impact on the everyday safety and security of the American public,”
said Senator Cardin. “Our primary responsibility as lawmakers is to protect the American people. Improving our drinking water and shielding our citizens from terrorism may be very different activities, but each is essential to allow our people to live healthy and prosperous lives free of natural- or man-made hazards.

“As we review America’s anti-terrorism policies and programs, we must ensure that our government uses its scarce resources wisely, and that it strikes an appropriate balance between national security and protecting civil liberties.

“I also look forward to restoring the Chesapeake Bay to its rightful position as a national treasure, showcasing it as an example of how restoring the health and bounty of America’s waters can have a positive impact on the dependent local economy.”

Senator Cardin was first elected to the Senate in 2006, after serving 20 years in the House of Representatives. He also serves on the Senate Foreign Relations, Budget, and Small Business and Entrepreneurship committees. He is Chairman of the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the U.S. Helsinki Commission.
