CARDIN, MIKULSKI, VAN HOLLEN ANNOUNCE FUNDS FOR NEW LANGLEY PARK TRANSIT CENTER

WASHINGTON –
U.S. Senators Benjamin L. Cardin and
Barbara A. Mikulski and U.S. Congressman Chris Van Hollen (all D-MD) today announced a U.S. Department of Transportation grant of $818,300 for the design and planning of a new transit center in Langley Park.
The new center would serve both Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.

Senators Cardin, Mikulski and
Congressman Van Hollen strongly supported the funding for the new transit center because the New Hampshire Ave.-University Blvd. corridor has become a congested bottle-neck for motorists and a dangerous intersection for pedestrians and transit riders attempting to catch the numerous bus lines serving the community.
The new transit center will help reduce congestion and improve access for transit riders who are catching and making transfers from the Metro and the various bus lines that service the area.

“I strongly support mass transit projects that will help reduce congestion, improve safety and reduce pollution,” said
Senator Cardin.
“The New Hampshire Ave.-University Blvd. corridor is dangerously congested and a new transit center will significantly improve traffic flow and reduce danger to pedestrians and drivers.”

“I fight every year for federal investments that help keep Marylanders on the move,” said
Senator Mikulski. “This grant is particularly important because in addition to improving public transportation, a new transit center in Langley Park will help improve public safety. Marylanders are ready for safer and faster commutes to work, better air quality, jobs today and jobs tomorrow. This grant helps us get there.”

“Eleven bus routes pass through the Takoma/Langley Park Crossroads, serving over 30,000 residents a day,” said
Congressman Van Hollen.  “The transit center will streamline operations and make much needed pedestrian safety improvements.”
