CARDIN, MIKULSKI APPLAUD GRANT FOR FIRE STATION IN DORCHESTER COUNTY
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-MD) today announced that Dorchester County has received a $60,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development (RD) grant to outfit a new fire station in East New Market with equipment. The station will also serve as an emergency shelter for the area.
“It’s critical that we ensure that our first responders have the tools they need to keep our families and communities safe,” Senator Cardin said. “This grant will give the residents of Dorchester County peace of mind knowing that the men and women of the East New Market Volunteer Fire Company have additional resources to help them do their job.”
“I know how important this funding is to Maryland communities – often it’s the difference between life and death,” Senator Mikulski said. “I am proud to fight for federal investments like this one which will enable the brave men and women at the East New Market Volunteer Fire Company to have the equipment they need when they need it. Maryland’s first responders can count on me to provide federal funding for the equipment, training and services they need and deserve.”
The East New Market Volunteer Fire Company will use the funds to purchase and install equipment, appliances, and furniture at the new station. The station also will be a FEMA designated emergency shelter with a community room, fully functional kitchen, restrooms and an emergency backup generator.
In addition to RD funds, the East New Market Volunteer Fire Company is providing $120,899, bringing the total project cost to $180,899. The USDA Rural Development program is committed to helping improve the economy and quality of life in rural America.
