Cardin, Mikulski Announce Rural Development Funding For Construction Of Water Infrastructure In Caroline County

WASHINGTONU.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-Md.) today announced that the Town of Greensboro will receive a $1,134,000 grant from the Department of Agriculture Rural Development (USDA-RD) to construct a regional public wastewater collection and treatment system to serve the towns of Greensboro and Goldsboro in Caroline County.  In addition to the grant, the project will be funded by a loan of $3,986,000 from USDA-RD to the Town of Greensboro.

“All Marylanders deserve the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they have reliable access to safe and clean water. Keeping this a reality is becoming increasingly difficulty as the water infrastructure we rely on outlives its expected lifespan,” said Senator Cardin. “I applaud USDA-RD’s aggressive approach, and strategic investments in innovative projects designed to meet the current and future needs of our water systems in Caroline County and across the nation.

“Maryland cities and towns need water and sewer infrastructure but they can’t do it on their own,” Senator Mikulski said. “These funds will allow the Town of Greensboro to improve critical infrastructure. It will create construction jobs today and a modernized water system that promotes community health and economic growth tomorrow.”

The project will replace the existing failed individual septic systems with a newly constructed regional public wastewater collection and treatment system to serve the towns of Greensboro and Goldsboro. By regionalizing the collection, conveyance, and wastewater treatment facilities of the area, this project will reduce cost and improve ground water purity for the towns and their residents. In addition to the $5,120,000 from USDA-RD, $600,000 of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds will be made available through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Approximately $4,200,000 in state funding will be provided by the Maryland Department of the Environment.

Senator Cardin is Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Water Subcommittee. Senator Mikulski is Chairwoman of the Appropriations Committee. Together they understand the economic, environmental and quality of life benefits of investing in infrastructure.
