WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-Md.) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) has awarded a grant of $827,200 to the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) to improve pedestrian crossings near the Twinbrook Metro Station and provide space for sidewalk and bike lanes on South Stonestreet Avenue, near the Rockville Metro station.

  “The Twinbrook and Rockville Metro Stations are heavily used by pedestrians and commuters” said Senator Cardin, a member of Environment and Public works Committee. “This grant will improve safety for pedestrians and provide important infrastructure improvements for commuters who use the stations.”

“The investment in the sidewalks and bike lanes at the Rockville and Twinbrook Metro Stations is an investment in jobs today and jobs tomorrow,” Senator Mikulski said. “It creates construction jobs today and when it’s complete will help people get to their jobs safely. Whether you’re a single mother getting to work, a student going to school or a tourist visiting our great state, I’ll continue to fight for money in the federal checkbook that creates jobs and keeps our commuters safe and on the move.”

According to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the Twinbrook Metrorail station served more than 4,700 riders daily in 2011.  The Twinbrook Station also serves as a hub for a number of Metro Bus Routes, including the C2, 4, which carries more than 10,000 riders daily between Twinbrook and Greenbelt.   The Rockville Station opened in 1974
