CARDIN, MIKULSKI ANNOUNCE FUNDING TO BRING NEW JOBS AND BUSINESSES TO EASTERN SHORE

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-MD) today announced three U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development (RD) grants totaling $85,650 for economic development and job creation on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  The funding will spur job growth and business development in Caroline, Somerset and Talbot counties.

“This funding provides small businesses on the Eastern Shore the helping hand they need to create new jobs that will drive economic growth,” said Senator Cardin, a member of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee.  “These grants are welcome news for Marylanders on the Eastern Shore, who will benefit from new job opportunities and business growth.  I will continue doing all I can to support small businesses, which are at the heart of job creation in Maryland and our nation.”

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and the cornerstone of our communities,” Senator Mikulski said. “Economic recovery and job creation go hand in hand with successful small businesses. These grants will help family businesses and small businesses in Maryland. They will help the recipients grow their businesses, bringing jobs to Maryland’s Eastern Shore.”

A $35,325 Rural Development grant to the Town of Princess Anne in Somerset County will be used to attract 6 new small businesses and create 18 to 24 new jobs in the area.  Another $35,325 grant will continue technical assistance to new and existing businesses, facilitate five redevelopment projects, and recruit new businesses to downtown Denton in Caroline County.  Finally, a $15,000 grant will support agricultural and resource-based industries and assist small food businesses in Talbot County.

The USDA Rural Development program is committed to helping improve the economy and quality of life in rural America.
